fonUFAL offers online course “Understanding the Phonology of a Natural Language”

The Phonetics and Phonology Research Group at the Federal University of Alagoas (fonUFAL) is offering the online course “Understanding the Phonology of a Natural Language” on 13 and 20 October 2026. The course will be taught by Fábia Fulni-ô (UFAL, Campus do Sertão) and Januacele da Costa (fonUFAL).

Structured in two complementary sessions, the course combines foundational concepts with hands-on analysis. The first session will address definitions, core concepts, and exercises in phonological description and analysis. The second will focus on applying these concepts to data from a natural language and discussing the results. Each online session will run for two hours, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. (Maceió time, UTC−3).

The course is part of fonUFAL’s academic training initiatives. By combining conceptual discussion with the analysis of linguistic data, it supports students and researchers in developing core procedures for phonological investigation and connects theoretical study with descriptive practice. The activity also directly reflects one of the group’s central research areas: the description and analysis of the sound systems of languages.

The event strengthens fonUFAL’s role in creating spaces for study and academic exchange in Phonetics and Phonology, bringing together training, research, and the empirical analysis of natural languages.
